What should you know about the Mevacor therapeutic effects?

Mevacor contains the active ingredient Lovastatin which belongs to a group of medicines called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. This enzyme HMG-CoA reductase is essential for the production of cholesterol in the organism by the liver. Decreased production of cholesterol in the organism causes liver to collect and eliminate bad cholesterol from the blood. Mevacor also increases the amount of HDL or good cholesterol and lowers the amount of triglycerides.

In which cases you must be cautious or completely discontinue the drug?

• Hypersensitivity
• acute liver disease, increased activity of liver transaminase (unknown etiology), ehepatic failure
• general grave condition of a patient
• pregnancy, lactation
• pediatric use
• with caution: liver disease (in history), chronic alcoholism, organ transplantation, immunosuppressive therapy, renal failure, urgent surgical manipulations (including dental).

Which undesirable side effects may be caused by the drug?

The Mevacor adverse effects include:

• digestive system: heartburn, nausea, constipation or diarrhea, flatulence, dry mouth, taste perversion, loss of appetite, stomachodynia, cholestatic jaundice, abnormal liver function, increased activity of liver transaminases, hepatitis, acute pancreatitis
• nervous system: dizziness, headache, fatigue, insomnia, seizures, paresthesia, mental disorders
• locomotor system: myalgia, myositis, myopathy, rhabdomyolysis (in patients receiving cyclosporine, gemfibrozil or nicotinic acid), arthralgia
• hemopoietic system: hemolytic anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia
• senses: mist, lentiform opacity, cataract, optic nerve atrophy
• laboratory values: increased activity of liver transaminases, increased activity of CPK
• allergic reactions: urticaria, angioedema, toxic epidermal necrolysis (Lyell syndrome), skin rash, itching
• other: low potency, acute renal failure (caused by rhabdomyolysis), chest pain, heart beat.
