What should you know about the Plavix therapeutic effects?

Plavox is an inhibitor of platelet aggregation. Clopidogrel (or more precisely its active metabolite) binds irreversibly to the platelet ADP receptors and selectively inhibits the binding of ADP to the platelet ADP-receptors and subsequent activation of GPIIb / IIIa complex under the influence of ADP, thus inhibiting the ADP-induced platelet aggregation. Plavix also inhibits platelet aggregation induced by other agonists due to blocking the activation of platelets released by ADP. Clopidogrel binds irreversibly to the platelet ADP receptors. Consequently, platelets that interact with ADP are not susceptible to the stimulation of ADP during the entire period of their life, and normal platelet function is restored with the same rate as turnover of platelets.

Plavix is capable to prevent the development of atherothrombosis in all localizations of atherosclerotic vascular lesions, particularly in cerebral, coronary or peripheral arteries.

When is the drug prescribed?

• Prevention of atherothrombotic disorders in patients with myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, or diagnosed peripheral arterial occlusive disease
• Prevention of atherothrombotic disorders (in combination with acetylsalicylic acid) in patients with acute coronary syndrome

In which cases you must be cautious or completely discontinue the drug?

• Hypersensitivity
• Severe hepatic insufficiency
• Severe pathological bleeding (eg., intracranial hemorrhage)
• Rare genetic galactose intolerance, lactose deficiency and malabsorption syndrome of glucose-galactose
• Pregnancy, lactation (breastfeeding)
• Pediatric and adolescent patients
• With caution: moderate hepatic insufficiency with risk of bleeding, renal insufficiency, trauma, surgery, gastrointestinal or intraocular diseases with risk of bleeding

Which undesirable side effects may be caused by the drug?

The Plavix adverse effects include:

• blood coagulation system: bleeding
• nervous system: headache, dizziness, paresthesia
• digestive system: dyspepsia, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, gastritis, constipation, vomiting, gastric and / or duodenal ulcer
• dermatological reactions: rash, itch

• direct and indirect anticoagulants
