Maxalt is an anti-migraine agent which is selective agonist of serotonin 5-HT1D-receptors. Anti-migraine effect is achieved through stimulation of those receptors casuing blood vessels in the brain to narrow. Metabolized with the participation of MAO type A.

• Suspected coronary artery disease, Prinzmetal's angina
• Basilar or hemiplegic migraine
• Hypersensitivity to rizatriptan
• Pregnancy, breastfeeding
• Pediatric and adolescent patients

The medication should be with caution in: diabetes, hypertension, smoking

Which undesirable side effects may be caused by the drug?

The Maxalt adverse effects include:

• Central nervous system and peripheral nervous system: dizziness, drowsiness, weakness, fatigue, headache, decreased mental alertness, insomnia, hyperesthesia, tremor, ataxia, nervousness, disorientation, blurred vision, rarely fainting
• Cardiovascular system: chest pain, heartbeat, rarely - arterial hypertension
• Digestive system: stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, diarrhea, dyspepsia
• Locomotor system: neck pain, muscle tension, feeling of heaviness and constraint in muscles, muscular weakness
• Dermatological reactions: skin erythema, pruritus, excessive sweat
• Other: thirst, hot flushes

• MAO inhibitors
