What should you know about the Crestor therapeutic effects?

A new representative of statins; cholesterol-lowering and lipid-lowering drug for treatment and prevention of atherosclerosis. Crestor (rosuvastatin) is characterized by high hypolipidemic activity; has greater ability to reduce cholesterol levels to target values than the other statins.

When is the drug prescribed?

• Primary hypercholesterolemia (type IIa, including family heterozygous hypercholesterolemia)
• Combined hyperlipidemia (Type IIb) as an adjunct to diet (where diet and other non pharmacological methods of treatment - exercise, weight loss - are not sufficient)
• Family homozygous hypercholesterolemia as an adjunct to diet and other cholesterol lowering therapy or in cases where such a therapy is not suitable to the patient.

In which cases you must be cautious or completely discontinue the drug?

• Hypersensitivity to rosuvastatin or any component of Crestor
• Liver disease in active phase, including a persistent increase in transaminase serum activity and any increase in the activity of transaminases in serum (more than 3 times compared with the upper limit of standard)
• Severe renal dysfunction (creatinine clearance 30 ml / min)
• Myopathy
• Simultaneous administration of cyclosporine
• Pregnancy and lactation
• Pediatric use and adolescence up to 18 years
• Lack of adequate methods of contraception in women of reproductive age
• With caution: risk of rhabdomyolysis (renal failure, hyperthyroidism, personal or family history of hereditary muscle diseases and prior history of muscle toxicity when using other inhibitors of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors or fibrates), alcohol addiction, patients older 70 years old, liver diseases in history, sepsis, arterial hypotension, extensive surgical interventions, trauma, severe metabolic, endocrine, or electrolyte imbalance, uncontrolled epilepsy.

Which undesirable side effects may be caused by the drug?

The Crestor adverse effects include:

• headache, dizziness
• constipation, nausea, abdominal pain
• myalgia, asthenia syndrome
