Combined antibacterial drug which consists of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. The medication works by inhibiting the synthesis of folic acid in the bacterial cells. • Respiratory tract infections: bronchitis (acute and chronic), bronchiectasis, lobar pneumonia, bronchopneumonia, Pneumocystis pneumonia
• Otolaryngology infections: otitis media, sinusitis, laryngitis, tonsillitis, scarlet fever
• Gastrointestinal infections: typhoid, paratyphoid, salmonella carriage, cholera, dysentery, cholecystitis, cholangitis, gastroenteritis caused by enterotoxic strains of Escherichia coli
• Skin and soft tissues infections: acne, furunculosis, pyoderma, wound infections, osteomyelitis (acute and chronic), brucellosis (acute), South American blastomycosis, malaria (Plasmodium falciparum), toxoplasmosis (in complex therapy).

• Hypersensitivity (including to sulfanilamides)
• Liver and / or renal failure
• Aplastic anemia
• B12-deficiency anemia
• Agranulocytosis
• Leukopenia
• Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency
• Pneumocystis pneumonia
• Folic acid deficiency
• Asthma
• Thyroid disease
• Children up to 6 years old and children with hyperbilirubinemia
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Which undesirable side effects may be caused by the drug?

The Co-trimoxazole adverse effects include:

• nervous system: headache, dizziness
• respiratory system: bronchospasm, pulmonary infiltrates
• digestive system: nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, diarrhea, gastritis, abdominal pain, glossitis, stomatitis, cholestasis, increased activity of liver transaminases, hepatitis, pseudomembranous enterocolitis
• hemopoietic system: leukopenia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis, megaloblastic anemia
• urinary system: polyuria, interstitial nephritis, renal failure, crystalluria, hematuria, increase in concentration of urea, toxic nephropathy with oliguria and anuria
• locomotor system: arthralgia, myalgia
• allergic reactions: itching, photosensitivity, rash, exudative erythema multiforme (including Stevens-Johnson syndrome), toxic epidermal necrolysis (Lyell syndrome), exfoliative dermatitis, allergic myocarditis, fever, angioneurotic edema, hyperemia of the sclera
