Pain is a useful reaction of our organism that alerts the individual if a component of his physiology is dysfunctioning. Pain may differ in intensity from mild to debilitating. The sensation of pain in most cases has an underlying cause which needs removal for the pain to completely disappear although many of the medications used to manage pain only treat the symptom and not the underlying cause. Pain can be divided in 2 categories which in turn can be divided in other:

• Chronic pain - pain that may sill be present for a long time after the underlying cause can be treated
• Acute pain - pain which is directly related to the cause and is caused by a certain stimulus
• Phasic pain - intense, sharp type of sensation which is caused by a possible threat to the tissue
• Tonic pain - gradually appearing pain that is caused by tissue damage occurring in skin or internal organs

The intensity of pain may be described by specific factors like the actual sensation of pain and the feeling which the affected patient may describe.

Different groups of drugs are used in treatment of pain:

• Opioid analgesics
• Non-opioid analgesics
