Probably everyone of us has ever felt down and depressed.
Depression itself is a very unpleasant mood that may last for weeks or even months. Some people may consider depression as a sign of weakness. However, they are very wrong. Depression is a serious medical condition that should not be neglected. The earlier you decide to consult with a professional the closer is the day when you can get rid of this mood. Today with our crazy rhythm of life no one is protected from this condition.
One of the drugs that is well-tolerated and considered to be very effective fighting depression is Zoloft 50 mg manufactured by Pfizer. The drugs is FDA approved since December 1991. Zoloft 50 mg is prescribed for treatment of the following conditions: depressions, anxiety, panic disorders, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder.
Before starting treatment with Zoloft, do not forget to consult with your doctor. Taking Zoloft at your own decision is prohibited.
The active ingredient of Zoloft is sertraline. Sertraline belongs to a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Other drugs in this class are Prozac, Paxil, Celexa and Luvox.
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter (a chemical messenger) produced by nerve cells in the brain that is used by the nerves to communicate with one another. A nerve releases the serotonin it produces into the space surrounding it. The serotonin either travels across the space and attaches to receptors on the surface of nearby nerves or it attaches to receptors on the surface of the nerve that produced it, to be taken up by the nerve and released again (a process referred to as re-uptake). A balance is reached for serotonin between attachment to the nearby nerves and reuptake. Selective serotonin inhibitors block the reuptake of serotonin and therefore change the level of serotonin in the brain.
The drug should be administered exactly as it was prescribed: once a day constantly either in the mornings or in the evenings.
Zoloft is available in capsule and oral concentrate forms. To prepare Zoloft oral concentrate, use the dropper provided. Measure out the amount of concentrate prescribed by your doctor and mix it with 4 ounces of water, ginger ale, lemon/lime soda, lemonade, or orange juice. (Do not mix the concentrate with any other type of beverage.) Drink the mixture immediately; do not prepare it in advance for later use. At times, a slight haze may appear after mixing, but this is normal.
Improvement with Zoloft may not be seen for several days to a few weeks. You should expect to keep taking it for at least several months.
Zoloft may make your mouth dry. For temporary relief suck a hard candy, chew gum, or melt bits of ice in your mouth.
