What is Clomid?
Clomid (clomiphene) is a synthetic medication that prevents estrogen from affecting the brain. The result is that the brain enhances the stimulation of the ovaries, that in turn, leads to increased estrogen levels and the probability of ovulation.
Why Clomid is used?
Clomid is used mainly to stimulate ovulation. Many women who do not ovulate, can start do so by taking Clomid.
Can clomiphene reduce fertility?
Antiestrogenic effect of clomiphene may provoke thickening of cervical mucus. This can make it difficult for the sperm to reach an ovule. The treatment may include artificial (vaginal) insemination and, in rare cases, an external control / influence on the level of estrogen.
Clomid may also provoke a thinning of the endometrium, which is an unfavorable factor for embryo implantation. If ultrasound identifies a thin endometrium, other drugs that stimulate ovulation can be prescribed.
How Clomid should be taken?
Clomiphene is usually taken daily, 1 tablet or 50 mg for 5 days. Treatment is usually started on the 2nd-5th day of the cycle (first day of the cycle is the first day of bleeding). Nowadays the drug is prescribed from the 2nd day of the cycle. If ovulation occurs but the pregnancy from the first cycle does not occur, then the treatment with clomifene can be repeated in the same dosage for 3-6 cycles. If the initial dose doesn't not bring to ovulation, the dose may be increased to 2 tablets within 5 days of the next cycle. The maximum dose of clomiphene is 150 mg, or 3 tablets daily for 5 days.
What are my chances to conceive after taking Clomid?
Chances to conceive while taking clomiphene constitute 10-13% per cycle of treatment, depending on age, cause of infertility, body's response to the treatment and other drugs that are used in conjunction with clomifene. This compares with 20-25% for women with normal fertility. The possibility of conception is increased to 30-60% after 6 cycles of receiving Clomid.
What are the chances of multiple pregnancy while taking clomiphene?
About 5-10% of pregnancies occurring while taking Clomid end with the birth of twins and less than 1% - with the birth of 3 or more children. This compares with 1.2% of twins born to women not receiving clomiphene.
Does Clomid cause any fetal abnormalities?
Clomiphene is used in the U.S. since 1967. To date, there is no evidence that clomiphene increases the probability of birth of children with disabilities and / or influences the development of children.
What should be done in case a double peak of LH?
Clomiphene increases the likelihood of false peaks of LH for several days after discontinuation of treatment with Clomid. As the drug usually should be administered from the 5th to the 9th day of the cycle, the change of color on the ovulation test on the 11th day can be misinterpreted.
It was determined that most women ovulate 7-10 days after the last pill (this corresponds to 16th-19th day of the cycle, in view of the beginning of the therapy on the 5th to the 9th day of the cycle).
