Mobic with the active component meloxicam belongs to the group of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs. Mobic produced by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals was approved by the FDA in 2000.
Mobic is not available OTC as it is a prescription medication. Mobic comes in two different dosages - 7.5 mg (taken once or twice a day) and 15 mg (taken once daily) tablets. Mobic can also be found in a form of 7.5mg/5mL oral suspension.
When Mobic is used?
Mobic is used to relieve the symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It relieves such symptoms as inflammation, pain, and joint stiffness.
How Mobic should be taken?
Mobic is advised to be taken with food or milk to prevent such a side effects as upset stomach . If you experience the stomach problems, it is recommended to take antacids as concomitant therapy.
Are there any restrictions to Mobic administration?
If a patient is allergic to any NSAID, they should avoid taking Mobic. In addition, those who suffer or ever had asthma, ulcers, stomach bleeding, and severe hepatic and / or renal diseases are not recommended to be treated with Mobic.
NSAID, including Mobic, can affect anyone suffering from stomach ulcers and bleedings. Usually such problems occur in long-term treatment, however susceptible patients may experience them taking NSAIDs for a short term period. If you notice a burning sensation in the stomach, vomiting, or black stool, inform your doctor immediately as these symptoms may require Mobic discontinuation.
In certain categories of patients Mobic can cause liver damage, water retention, and swelling. All NSAIDs, including Mobic, may increase the risk of cardiovascular events, e.g. stroke, therefore it must be taken very carefully by patients with hypertension and a high risk of heart problems.
Another restriction to taking Mobic is pregnancy, especially last trimester, and lactation period.
Is Mobic a safe medication?
Mobic is usually well tolerated but can manifest the following side effects in some patients: dyspepsia, diarrhea, nausea, headache, dizziness. In rare cases, patients may experience flu-like symptoms.
Mobic should not be taken with certain drugs to avoid complications of the treatment. Do not use Mobic while on:
- other NSAIDs, esp. aspirin
- ACE inhibitors
- diuretics
- lithium
- anticoagulants
- antimetabolites
What happens if I overdose Mobic?
Overdose of Mobic is usually manifested in the form of drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, upset stomach and gastrointestinal bleeding. In severe form of overdose, patients may experience breathing disorders, coma, seizures, and even a heart attack. That is why it is recommended to strictly follow the prescribed dose.
