Helminths is the common name of parasitic worms that inhabit in the body cavities of humans and animals causing the disease called helminthiasis.

According to World Health Organization data, each year approximately half of population of the planet are infected by one of three main types of worms such as ascariasis (1.2 billion people.), ancylostomiasis or hookwarm disease (900mln.) and trichocephalosis (700 million). Some of the studies shows that 95-99% of population have parasites, but do not know about it.

The helminths include representatives of tapeworms or cestodes, flukes or trematodes (both of these groups are flat worms), roundworms or nematodes.

Treatment of helminthiasis is very large branch of medicine. This branch is characterized by a wide variety of nosological units: ascariasis and alveococcosis, cysticercosis, echinococcosis, schistosomiasis, trichinosis and schistosomiasis. Some of the diseases are very difficult diagnosed. For example, some of the them are misdiagnosed as tumors, others are treated only by surgical intervention. Many helminthosis can not be treated by synthetic preparations because of high risk of larvas multiplication.

Depending on the type of helminths, the medications are classified into the following categories:

• Preparations containing Mebendazole (Vermox) are highly effective against enterobiasis and trichocephalosis.
• Preparations containing diethylcarbamazine drugs used against different types of filariasis, including damages of lyphatic system, hypoderm and eye tissues
• Preparations containing Levamisol are used in ascaridiasis, ancylostomiasis, necatoriasis, strongyloidosis, trichostrongylosis, enterobiasis and toxoplasmosis
• Bephenium hydroxynaphthoate is active against nematodes - ascariasis, hookworm, trichocephalosis and trichostrongylosis
